Restore and Protect Your Teeth

Many people these days are conscious of their oral health and the effect it has on their general wellbeing.

Traditionally, metal amalgam (mercury) was the only material of choice for people suffering from dental decay and cavities in need of a dental filling. Concerns have been raised about the use of dental amalgam because it contains mercury. There is an ongoing controversy as to whether having mercury fillings in our mouth poses any risk.

Depending on your opinion you may opt to have tooth coloured dental fillings instead.

Some advantages of tooth coloured dental fillings include:
– Aesthetics
– Stain-resistant
– Strong and durable
– Helps to strengthen the tooth when bonded to the tooth
– Can be completed in just one visit

For further treatment considerations please visit our risk page here.

Dental Fillings Options

With the advancement in dental technology, there are many other alternatives to traditional amalgam (metal) fillings.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Dental porcelain has properties similar to tooth enamel. It is a tooth coloured substance that is partly translucent, that absorbs and reflects light to mimic the properties of a pearly white shine.

A porcelain inlay or onlay, on occasion, has superior properties over that of a traditional dental filling.

With the advancement in dental technology, there are many other alternatives to amalgam such as direct composite (tooth coloured) dental fillings, and indirect porcelain fillings (Inlays/ Onlays).

Amalgam (Metal) Fillings

Dental amalgam is a silver-coloured filling material. It is made of mercury, silver, copper, zinc and tin. Dentists have used it to fix teeth for over 150 years. Dentists and scientists have done a lot of research on dental amalgam.

Amalgam was commonly used by dentists in the 1990s. These days it is not commonly used. Some dentists do not use it at all.

Composite Resin

Composite resin is a tooth-coloured or white filling material. Dentists can use it for fillings in both the front and back teeth.

Dentists glue composite fillings to the surface of the tooth. This is called bonding. Because composite resin is glued to the tooth’s surface, dentists don’t need to cut away as much tooth structure to fix teeth with composite fillings.

The colour of the material can be matched to the colour of the tooth being fixed. People may not be able to see the filling if the colour is matched to your tooth well.

Frequently asked Dental Fillings questions

What types of materials are used for Dental Fillings?

There are several types of fillings, including amalgam and tooth-coloured options like composite resin and porcelain. Each differing in appearance, durability, and strength.

How long do Dental Fillings last?

This may vary depending on the material of your filling. Usually on average, dental fillings last for 10 years or more, and in some cases less.

Is Dental Filling procedure painful?

The dental filling procedure is generally not painful. Local anaesthetic will be used to ensure you feel as comfortable as possible during and after your procedure. At Dental Boutique™, we also offer many other pain management options if you require them.

How long does it take to get a Dental Filling?

We reserve 60 minutes for our dental filling procedure; however, it is dependent on the size and location of the cavity.

Can I eat or drink after getting a Dental Filling?

We recommend waiting around 1 to 2 hours following your treatment before starting to consider eating soft foods again. However, every case is different. For some patients, the effects of local anaesthetic may take longer to wear off, so you should wait until you have a sense of feeling within your mouth.
