What Is All On Implants™ Procedure?

Written by Dr Reuben Sim

13 December 2021

As a dentist, I work with patients who present with missing teeth. One of the options I sometimes discuss is the All on Implants™ procedure, which can replace a full set of teeth in a jaw with a fixed dental bridge supported by implants.

In dental terms, this involves placing four implants in the jaw – typically two at the front and two at the back – and attaching a custom-made bridge to these implants. For example, in the upper jaw, the bridge is fixed to the four implants, providing a stable, permanent replacement for missing teeth. This approach can be used in either the upper or lower jaw, depending on the patient’s needs.

Historically, dental implants were placed with a waiting period of three to six months before the final teeth could be attached. During this time, patients could either go without teeth or maybe they used a temporary denture while the implants healed. Some patients may have found these temporary solutions uncomfortable, which is an important consideration when planning treatment.

The origin of All on Implants

All on Implants™ is a dental treatment approach that was originally developed in Portugal. While it has been used for several years, it has become more widely used in recent times as a method for replacing multiple missing teeth with a fixed bridge supported by implants.

The benefits of All on Implants procedure

One feature of the All on Implants™ procedure is that, in some cases, a temporary set of teeth can be attached within one to three days after implant placement. This allows patients to have functional teeth during the healing period, rather than going without teeth while the implants integrate with the jawbone.

This procedure can also be considered for patients who currently use dentures that may be uncomfortable or do not fit well. In addition, it may be recommended for patients whose remaining teeth cannot be restored due to extensive decay or gum disease. Dental professionals assess each patient’s oral health to determine the most appropriate treatment options.

In some cases, patients with gum disease or failing teeth may have an increased risk of complications related to oral health, which dental professionals consider when recommending the most appropriate treatment options.

Understanding your options

All on Implants™ is one option for replacing missing teeth, but it is not the only approach. There are multiple treatment options available, including dental bridges, veneers, and other implant-based solutions. When considering any treatment, it’s important to consult a dentist with experience across a range of dental disciplines so that the most suitable option for your individual oral health can be identified.

It’s also important to remember that the All on Implants™ procedure is a permanent treatment. Once the implants and bridge are placed, the procedure cannot be reversed. Taking the time to understand all options and discussing them thoroughly with your dentist can help ensure that you make an informed decision.
