What is a Gummy Smile?

A "gummy smile" is created when gum tissue extends too far along the tooth surfaces, and there is noticeable amount of gum tissue visible above the upper teeth when you smile.

A smile can appear gummy for many reasons. These include:

Excess gums
Upper lip that lifts excessively when smiling
Incorrect proportion of teeth size and shape

What are the benefits of a Gummy Smile treatment?

– Reshapes uneven or excessive gum tissue for a more symmetrical, balanced smile.

A technique we use with laser technology to remove and reshape excess gum tissue in small sections that will reveal more of your teeth. This can create a more proportionate smile with a better ratio of gums to teeth.

2. Gum Lift With Porcelain Veneers

“Gummy smiles” are sometimes caused by disproportionate size and shape of teeth. If your gum tissue is healthy and correctly positioned, veneers can be a treatment used to help correct the size, shape and proportion of your teeth (gum contouring). This combination can help to decrease the amount of gum showing and increase tooth size.

3. Gum Lift With Clear Aligners Or Invisalign

Moving the position of your natural teeth may be enough to change the proportions of your smile with treatments like Invisalign/ Clear Aligners.

However if required, gum recontouring can be completed in conjunction with orthodontic treatment to help enhance orthodontic results by reshaping excessive or uneven gum tissue.

Does gum recontouring hurt?

Gum recontouring is typically performed under local anesthesia to minimise discomfort for our patients. We do tend to recommend patients to have some over-the-counter pain relief after their treatment to help with any mild soreness.

Will I see results immediately?

Yes, your reshaped gum line will be visible immediately, however, the final results will be apparent once the gums have fully healed.

How do I care for my gums after the procedure?

Keep the area clean by brushing gently and using any prescribed rinses. Avoid strenuous activities and follow any additional aftercare instructions given to you by your dentist.

Can I combine gum recontouring with other cosmetic treatments?

Absolutely! Many of our patients combine gum recontouring with veneers, teeth whitening, or Invisalign for a complete smile makeover.
